are rar. files lossy?

.rar is lossless. .zip is also lossless.

but it isn't normally used for audio because it's not as efficient as, say, FLAC, because FLAC is designed specifically for audio.

Handling is pretty much the same as for zip files, assuming that you have an archive software that actually supports rar decompression (WinRAR of course, 7zip and many others for sure, probably even WinZip)

I belong to a streamload group that always has lots of live shows in rar files.

I find FLAC so easy to work with, but rar, for me, has been a nightmare to covert to wav files. thanx for the response. staffino

Rar is just a wrapper, whatever is inside may or may not be lossless. You can't convert rar to audio cd without first extracting what is in the rar container. After you extract the contents then you do what you have to do with the shn flac or ape or whatever files you have extracted.
