Video sound
I wondered if you clever people might be able to help...
I have lost sound on video playback on my PC (Windows Vista Home Premium edition)- it effects dvds (but only *some* dvds, strangely) and YouTube. I gather that this may be some codec issue- but am loathe to start messing around with codec settings etc in case my audio settings are effected. Any ideas on how to address this issue? Thanks, Owy

Re: Video sound
Here you can grab the K-lite mega codec pack and install it. There are many different versions of the pack, but since you can select what you do and don't want to install, it's best just to get the mega pack. At the very least you will get a ton of codecs you never had, and also reinstall all of the codecs you already had. That should fix your problem if it is codec related.
BTW, the newest version 7.0.0 is compatible with vista. Here's what you get: Contents of version 7.0.0: Player: * Media Player Classic Homecinema [version 1.5.0.2827] * Media Player Classic Homecinema [version 1.2.1008.0] * Media Player Classic [version 6.4.9.1 rev. 107] ffdshow: * ffdshow [revision 3764] * ffdshow VFW interface DirectShow video decoding filters: * XviD [version 1.3.0 build 2010-12-07] * On2 VP7 [version 7.0.10.0] * MPEG-2 (DScaler5) [version 0.0.8.0] * MPEG-2 (Cyberlink) [version 8.4.0.1408] DirectShow audio decoding filters: * AC3/DTS/LPCM (AC3Filter) [version 1.63b] * Vorbis (CoreVorbis) [version 1.1.0.79] * AAC (MONOGRAM) [version 0.9.6.0] DirectShow audio parsers: * FLAC (madFLAC) [version 1.10] * WavPack (CoreWavPack) [version 1.1.1] * MusePack (MONOGRAM) [version 0.9.2.0 | 0.4.0.0] * Monkey's Audio (DCoder) [version 1.0] * OptimFROG (RadLight) [version 1.0.0.1] * AMR (MONOGRAM) [version 1.0.1.0] * DC-Bass Source [version 1.3.0] * AC3/DTS Source (AC3File) [version 0.7b] DirectShow source filters: * Haali Media Splitter [version 1.10.348.15] * AVI splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * MP4 splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * Matroska splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * Ogg splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * MPEG PS/TS splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * FLV splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * RealMedia splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * CDXA Reader (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] * MPEG audio splitter (Gabest) [version 1.5.1.2910] DirectShow subtitle filter: * DirectVobSub (a.k.a. Re: Video sound
Try to uninstall the audio drivers. I don't think it's a codec problem.

Re: Video sound
CCCP is another great codec pack...either way you go, I would definitely go the route of exploring codecs before uninstalling sound card drivers. I have had these same issues, and I have very rarely uninstalled then reinstalled a driver to fix the issue (not to say that this isn't the fix in some situations).
On the topic of drivers, you could always check to see if there are newer versions available for your sound card. That was the case for a video display issue I had, and it turned out that there was a newer driver for my video card and low and behold that fixed the problem...but again, I never had to uninstall the driver, rather just use the update driver option in the device manager. It will let you know if you are using the most current version or not.
