Why are lossy audio DVD's acceptable?

amateurs = mostly DVD5 & low budget to moderate equipment

I don't take it too seriously. I want to liberate my video in the highest quality, thus I record everything in XP for the highest bitrate possible. When it comes to Grateful Dead, I am thankful that the people making them are encoding in LPCM due to the fine quality of the overdubbed audio. If I was doing that kind of production I would not compromise the integrity of the original source.

There is not a standalone that captures as LPCM. Even if they come up with one, it will still be crap as standalone captures suck balls.

Save your money, get a video capture card and some cables and run the VCR to HD.

don't confuse dynamics compression with data compression! Analog dynamic compression is not "lossy", like we talk about when digital audio is encoded to a "lossy" data compression scheme like MP3 ot AC3.
