WMP 11 did get installed. Also, some "pop-up" laden discs have been played, but the problem actually began before they were.
the WAV>FLAC>WAV conversion sounds good, I'll try that, thanks Five No members have liked this post.

WMP 11 has even more heavy handed DRM than earlier versions, you said the files ripped with WMP are the bulk of the problem so I would avoid using it in the future.
