Another Uploading Question (Way Too Low)
I'm a newbie when it comes to P2P networks.
After reading a number of reviews of bittorent clients I decided to use Azureus. For the most part it has worked quite well -- I was able to overcome a NAT problem and now everything is all green dots and smilies. Depending on the torrent and the site I can hit download speeds of just under 450. I have one problem however, my upload speeds are generally very low. Sometimes much lower (only 10% of) the swarm average when downloading a torrent. I've read through all the relevant FAQ's provided by Azureus but I can't seem to figure it out. Even when I'm done downloading a torrent and I'm only seeding my upload rate is very low (I have my upload cap set at 40kB/s and I never come close, uploading maybe 5kB/s or so.) How can a fix this problem? I want to maintain a "1" ration on the sites I use. Thanks No members have liked this post.

Re: Another Uploading Question (Way Too Low)
You may have to set a download cap. If you max download is just under 450, try setting a download cap of 350 and see if that helps. If you are downloading at max (450), then you are leaving no room in the 'pipe' to upload with.

I had considered that, but the low upload exists whether I'm downloading just south of 450 or at 50. And the problem persists even when I'm not downloading anything (just seeding.) hmm. No members have liked this post.

Re: Another Uploading Question (Way Too Low)
Are you trying to seed shows that have a lot of peers (leechers) who want the show? And, how many shows are you trying to seed at once. Also, have you ever done a speed test to see what your max upload/download is supposed to be?

I've just checked my speed again with my ISP and it's large enough to have sufficient upload capacity. Here is the result: 1075.8 / 74.1 KB/sec I checked through Azureus's FAQ again and it appears that my ISP is on their "bad ISP" list. In fact, it's second from the top for all of North America In the FAQ they suggest that my ISP might be engaging in "traffic shaping." They suggest some alterations to the programs preferences, but the main changes don't seem to be available on the Mac version. Also, I tried capping my upload speed severely, first at 100 and then at 50 -- neither change had any effect. Heck, I even took the upload cap off and set it for "infinite" and still no difference. Also, in regards to your prior post -- I'm only downloading one torrent at a time or seeding one at a time. Hopefully you can shed some light on this. I'd hate to be branded a leech a week into discoverying this site! Thanks No members have liked this post.

Re: Another Uploading Question (Way Too Low)
One the the best things you can do to get around the 'traffic shaping' is to not use the standard bittorrent ports of 6881-6889. Try using something between 50000-54000. Make sure that you enter that in Azureus (options > Connection) and that you forward the port throught your router/modem and any firewall you may use.
The other thing you can do is use encrytion - options > connection > transport encrytion . Check the box for Require encrytion and see how that goes (and play with the check boxes there if you still aren't getting better speeds - sorry, I don't use encryption, so I'm not sure which options are the best, so that's why I said play with them.) I know that those are things you can do on Mac Azureus. (Do you have a link to the suggestions? I can probably find the options if I know what you are looking for. I'm on a mac and use Azureus.)

Thanks alot for your help. I figured out what the problem is and it isn't really a question of settings or a problem with my ISP. It seems that the upload speeds I get are dependent upon how large (how many peers are involved) the torrent is and how quickly I jump in. I recently jumped into a torrent early and before I had complete the download I was uploading at about 75K! So again, thanks for your patience and helping me through the problem.
