Noise Reduction or Lossy?
I have always been unsure about this one- it looks lossy but doesn't sound lossy. It is taken from a cassette source recorded in a large stadium, no lineage information. There is a strange spike at just about 16000 Hz. Could this be the effect of a TV being left on during the transfer? Any ideas? I can provide a sample.

Re: Noise Reduction or Lossy?
I'd call that lossy for sure... looks like md. check out those "parapets" starting around 15kHz. I've never seen nr that creates that artifact. I'm not at all certain how the stripe got there
I think this is the same show discussed here: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...ad.php?t=37184 or maybe another show from the same guy??

Re: Noise Reduction or Lossy?
Thanks for taking a look Five. This is the same show as the one shown in the thread you linked. I didn't even see that thread before I posted this. The original poster and I have been exchaging e-mails about this one.
I forgot that portable MD recorders were "out" by 1992, so that very well could be a possibility. I guessed it was from a cassette source because in parts, you can hear some wow and flutter. I think the spike was somehow introduced in the transfer from whatever the original source was. I know my laptop sound card did that once when I went straight out of the MD into the line input. Re: Noise Reduction or Lossy?
you're welcome yeah I was thinking it could be from a bad soundcard or some wonky HIFI VHS machine or something screwy with the taper's mic (eg the cheapo mic in my ppc has a spike like this). Wherever it came from, the atrac has broken up the line (look in the sa) so therefore must have been in the signal before it MD-ified.
