Getting Audio Off DVD's

My friend just gave me a stack of DVD's where he ran his audio masters thru a cassette deck into a standalone DVD player. So they are all video files. Any easy to use freeware to get these off so I can play around with them and maybe put them up?

standalones use 'ac3' lossy audio codec so they are not suitable for posting here or trading in general.

there was a program called DVD Audio Extractor that ripped FLAC from DVD's i used in the past. it worked nicely. I've heard these days VLC is supposed to be able to do it but i haven't tried yet

Cool, thanks! But if I can't do anything with these, no point in doing anything when I can just listen to them in the DVD player...

There's a couple tapes I might want to borrow and re-do if possible but I am going to so many shows right now it may be awhile if ever.

only issue is somehow they log your MAC address when you download the trial so that once it runs out you cant just re-download it on the same computer. i changed IP address to try and fool them but they still knew i used it so it must be the MAC address. might be programs out there to spoof your MAC address but havent found any yet. then again havent really looked

No, there's no way a site can know your MAC address. What probably happened is when you installed the program a registry key was added which flagged the date it was installed.

Anyway, here's a free program that will extract the audio from a DVD. It's called PGCDemux.

Simply run the program and then use it to open the .IFO file of your DVD (probably VTS_01_0.IFO)

Make sure the "Demux all audio streams" checkbox is ticked and then press "Process". In a couple of minutes you'll have a .WAV, .ac3 or .mp2 file which you can then load into an audio editor and split into tracks.

i really wish you were right because that would make the net so much safer for official material tracker users, but the MAC address is part of the http protocol of what your computer has to send to the website in order to gain permission to access it. In order to fix or change this the internets infrastructure/protocols software wise would have to change, but without having this protocol a website would never know if its data ever reached your computer resulting in connection issues.

All websites can get some sort of mac address information from you but if you proxy it the website will not automatically find your original one. While proxying can be done easily it still is a bit more of a manual process and is not automatically collected by the websites connection protocol.

this program is nice though, although i can't seem to rip in any other format besides ac3, it seems like its nice and straight forward but is there some kind of setting im missing somewhere to make it rip lossless FLAC?

All that program does is extract the existing audio from the DVD. If the DVD has ac3 encoded audio then that's what it will extract. No conversion is done.

You can always convert the ac3 audio to FLAC by using another program. AC3 audio is lossy, so converting it to FLAC is not going to make it sound any better.
