Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
I've just got back into recording shows. I used to do it frequently back in the late 70s and 80s and have now got myself a Tascam DR40 and just recorded my first show. I'm really pleased with the outcome BUT when I read the blurb about what has to be done to upload a torrent I gave up. I'm reasonably techie but the article may as well have been written in a foreign language.
Apologies if this isn't the case. Can anyone direct me to a "For Dummies" explanation of how to prepare the files for uploading? I want to let people have access to my recordings but at the moment haven't a clue where to start. Thanks in advance for any help. No members have liked this post.

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
If I can do it, I'm sure you can.
Let's start at the beginning, one step at a time. If we're going too slow at any point, just say so; 1. What format did you record in? WAV? FLAC? Other? 2. Where do you have the recording stored? SD Card? On the recorder? On a PC hard drive? 3. Have you downloaded a torrent client program? Vuze, uTorrent or similar? No members have liked this post.

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
You've obviously downloaded something already, so that should have given you some idea of the structure of a torrent - audio files, info file, checksums - all neatly grouped in a handy, clearly-named folder.

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
Convert from WAV to FLAC first, with Trader's Little Helper, Foobar2000 or similar. If the show is a large WAV file with no track breaks, use something like Audacity to split it into tracks
Decide on a folder which will be your torrent folder, and stick to it. Downloads will go there, and can be moved elsewhere once downloaded. You can build your uploads elsewhere, then copy folder into the torrent folder. Make an Info file for your first show, based on what you've seen of others here - Artist, date, venue, personnel, tracks, lineage. No members have liked this post.

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
Use CD Wave Editor to split tracks. It's the easiest and guarantees no SBE's.

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
Here's a link to a thread where they recommend using freeware program Audacity to split a long wav file into tracks, and talk some about how to do it.

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
Make a copy before you attempt to split the large track in case something goes kerphlooyey !

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
So you have a set of FLACs, in a folder named according to artist-event-date, and a txt file with the info, including lineage?

Re: Incredibly complicated to set up a torrent?
checksums here we go!
5. Create an appropriate checksum. For FLAC seeds, a FLAC fingerprint at mimimum is required. For SHN and APE seeds, an st5 checksum (also called shntool md5) is required. If your seed includes a traditional wholefile md5 file, it's OK to include it, but you'll need to also post st5 checksums or FLAC Fingerprints in the checksum box when you create your seed. See the Checksum Types FAQ for an explanation of the different checksum types.

Trader's Little Helper can be used to create the checksum file.
